Hey there! I have this growing conviction for networking and how to approach the UX of EdTech Slack Community in particular. Kinda like a formula.
30min per month x 12 months = a foundational network of genuine connections in the EdTech industry in a year
Most of us are pretty busy and working full time roles or freelance gigs. It can be challenging to make real connections outside your day-to-day team. This is why I hold 30 minutes on my calendar every Friday for hopping on a call with people from the Community.
Who is here?
It is primarily…
Product designers
UX researchers
Content Designers
Instructional and learning designers
Teachers
College students
Many folks work in the EdTech industry or have a background in education. Pretty much all have a vested interest in supporting the field of learning. These are folks that I love connecting with and learning from week to week.
One of my previous managers (in a completely different industry) would regularly say that she strives to just “hold the space” with her team to allow anything pressing to come up in regular 1:1s. She didn’t always have an agenda, but she was just committed to holding the space.
I have hit this place where I turned off the question of “do I have time this week or month?” I am committing to holding the space, and seeing what happens. And the consistency of this over the years has now resulted in an effect that is… profound. I’d invite others to hold the space for making connections.
And a 2nd hack
Another way to grow your network is to get visibility on our Community Publication. And if you are looking to find talent in our space, you might start there! Our Editorial Lead just published some info on how to write for us. We have some great pieces in the works there.
It is worth noting that our podcast highlights leading voices in our industry, too. Another place to find amazing talent and learn off of real world stories.
The UX of EdTech Studio works on client projects. So it is fun to periodically discover folks who would be a great fit on one of the project teams. Our network is wide and the bench is deep since we are situated to always be finding talent. And I invite like-minded folks to join and build out their network here as well.
Takeaway this
If you are a designer or researcher in EdTech, consider our community application on our website. Consider writing for us. Most importantly, consider investing in people. Maybe even just one person. Bring your head up from the work on a regular basis to make connections and broaden your perspective.
